Big Smile [:D] Fat Girl Running...Progress

I wanted to start a thread in the progress Forum that way I can just keep adding to it. Today was my W1D2 !...and I did it! Just finding a place to run this morning was more challenging then my actual run. Until I feel alittle better about running I'd rather not do it with fields of spectators...and that's what it was this morning!! Everywhere I went was full with soccer games, and baseball games..etc. Finally I said screw it...and just picked a spot. I'd be lieing if I didn't say that most of my run was back and forth behind a row of trees...but hey...I did it!! How was it?? Not HORRIBLE..but it was tough for me, especially being so overweight. This may sound corny...but this forum popped in my mind while running and it did keep me going. I couldn't wait to change my status to W1D2!! It shows SOME type of progress. There was a moment that I was struggling..and thought if I pass out right here..how will anyone know who I am??? Then I thought...ahhh haaa....I have my keys in my pocket and they could push the panic button..find my car and my wallet and I will be ok...LOL LOL!! See with all that thinking the run was over before I knew it.! LOL

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weekend!

-Holly

Congratulations Holly - you are on your way! Yes [Y]   I know how you feel about running in public - that's why I stick to my treadmill.

I'm can't remember where you're located, but have you ever checked places like Craigslist for a cheap (but working) treadmill?  There is also a place on Yahoo Groups called Freecycle where people recycle items by giving stuff away for free so that it doesn't end up in a landfill.  Here in Columbus, Ohio, I see exercise equipment listed pretty regularly.

I have been told by my very fit friends on more than one occasion that when they see "bigger" people exercising, they are very proud of them, not amused.  Don't be embarrassed to go out there and run.  You should be proud that you are making the effort.  It's motivating, much more so than getting on a treadmill every couple of days.

Good luck and stick with it!  The end seems a long way off but keep at it.  I can't tell you how rewarding it has been to progress through the program.  YOU CAN DO IT

I hate to be seen running, too. However, I know that when I see people out running I don't care what size they are or what kind of shape they're in (or how fast they're going!) in my head I admire them. So try to remember that!
Good for you getting out there & FINISHING!!

I agree with suburbanrobot and sAm. I really enjoy being outdoors, and my condo complex is sooooooooooooo pretty in the spring (everyone plants gorgeous flower beds). So I'm not going to let what people think of me keep me inside. If they don't like what they see, they can avert their eyes. I am what I am..........and one of the things I am is a runner!

Thank you for all of the comments. That's one of the things that i'm really enjoying about this whole running program, and that's being outside. Yes...I am some what self conscious, but being out in the fresh air is so great. I'm going to keep pushing ahead and not worry about what others think!

I agree with the comments, get out there! If people don't like what they see then they can stop looking!

Personally, I doubt if anyone really pays more than a fleeting thought to anyone that goes running past, perhaps only to think "I wish I could do that"

Keep up and keep going!

I wanted to share something too- My husband is a very fit powerlifter and used to live in the gym (not so much now, long story). But he used to tell me about how he'd see this very obese lady who would come in really early in the morning, Im sure to avoid everyone staring. And he'd always tell me how much he admired her for having the courage to just get in there and start, despite what people may have thought of her. He'd say "well at least she's in there doing something- it takes alot of courage to even start!"
Anyway, my point is that maybe people don't think the worst when they see us out there running. Maybe all they say to themselves is "wow, she is out there running! That's great, I really admire her!".
I know that's what I always think to myself when I see someone running/biking etc. No matter how big they may be.

Week 1 is officially done! I did W1D3 this morning. I think today was my hardest run. Can that be? I was breathing fine..I wasn't out of breath or thinking I was going to have a heart attack...but my legs!!??? They felt like battered and bruised lead weights!! They were sore and I was having trouble even lifting them. Ughhh...but I finished!! :) It has to get easier .....right?

Great work on finishing week 1 hmm114!! Its a great feeling to finish the first week and I know exactly what you mean when your legs feel like lead weights!

Make sure you stretch lots and what I found helped me, was to go for a walk on your off days, and really stretch out your legs. Always eased my legs and I was ready for the next run.

Looking forward to seeing your progress reports.
smile ... it makes people wonder what you are up to ;-)

Nice work on finishing week 1! It's difficult to figure out how to get started and work up the courage to do it. Don't worry, it gets easier and you won't die. I thought for sure I would on several occasions but it turned out I was fine, eventually.
