Just started running (jogging & walking) but have a question

My name is Chris, I'm 28 years old and weigh 167 pounds. I pretty much have been a couch potato for the past 10 years and my exercise constitutes taking the trash to the curb twice a week.
I'm trying to lose a little weight (5-10 pounds), tone up, and improve my lung capacity (15 year smoker). For my first day out last Wednesday I did 5 miles switching between jogging and walking every 1/4 mile. I followed that up on Saturday by doing the same process, but for 6 miles. I plan to stick to the 6 mile routine for at least a couple of more weeks and try to walk less as I progress. I will be making my third run today, but I had a question about my routine.
Is doing this 6 mile routine three days a week ok? I am able to handle it physically, but I was worried that maybe I'd be better off doing three miles per day, 5 days a week. Please let me know what you guys think.

With C25K and other running sites, books, etc. - most want you to have a recovery day, so every other day is usually the norm. Have you thought about switching your routine to C25K and building up to just running?

I think 6 miles is a bit much to begin with Also, if you don't have a set and regimented plan (such as C25K) then you will probably wander off track and suddenly find yourself doing nothing all week. This being a C25K forum, I would obviously suggest getting some C25K podcasts (I, along with thousands, recommend Robert Ullrey's) and following the plan. Don't skip ahead, take it slow and you will be more likely to stick with it. The reason it's so popular is that it's stupid easy to follow and it works. Try it, you will likely progress faster than just trying to push yourself in a general direction.<br>

Chris, first off I'd like to say congratulations for getting out there and doing something to improve your health. Most people just talk about it and never do anything at all. That puts you well above average - you go dude! :-)
I'll second the others in suggesting that you swap to the C25K program. Weight will start being lost after your heart rate is at 80% of it's maximum level for 15 minutes consistently. If you're only running and then walking your heart never gets to be in the weight loss range for long enough.
Are you quitting smoking as well?

Thank you all. To be honest, i tried the C25K program a while back and I just couldn't get motivated to do it. Oddly enough I find it more motivating to get out and do 6 miles every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday because I get to push myself.
I started calorie counting yesterday and did my second 6 mile day and it seemed much harder. I think I didn't eat nearly enough, because I was lacking energy for the last two miles. I have not quit smoking, but I would definitely like to work towards it. Oddly enough it's more or less my calves that are holding me back and not my lungs, however I do have to concentrate on my breathing quite a bit.
I think it's easier for me to do the 6 mile days, because I have a friend that does it with me. I don't have a heart rate monitor, but I did check my heart rate the old fashioned way while doing some walking between runs and my heart rate was at 160 (this was after 4 miles), so I'd imagine that it's staying high enough, but I could be wrong.
I'll give some careful thought to the C25K podcasts.

I came here with similar question. I am at the 28 minute mark and the last two weeks my legs have been extra sore after running and the next day. Wondering when that will quit. I run on slight hills now. Ran on a flat area Saturday with minimum pain.

Well I didn't switch to the C25K plan, but I changed it up last time I went out. I did a walk/jog that consisted of 1/4 mile walk, 1/4 mile jog, 1/4 walk, 3/4 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile jog. As soon as I finished that I rode a bike for 4 miles and then 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk. I felt like I pushed myself better, but I still felt like I had more energy after it was all over. I simply jogged slower, so I could jog further.

Whatever happened to Ullrey? He never made any more podcasts that I could find. I finished the C25K program and got tired of waiting so I made some new ones in his absence. Would love some feedback if you care to give them a listen. You can get them off itunes by doing a search for "runningmate podcast".
