Confused [*-)] Do you "run" the whole way, or is walking allowed?
Reply Quote
When people do lo-o-o-ong runs (1/2 or whole marathon) or even less, do they run the whole way?? I always figured that you had to run for it to "count". On the BL Mike and Ron actually walked the marathon, but were considered to have completed a marathon. I guess they did complete it, but I would think one would have to run. Anyone here walk during long runs??

Hi Judy,

I think that the "goal" is to RUN all the time, however at races there are people that walk/run...and as long i know nobody blame them for do that...

I just completed a 21K with a couple of injuries and undertrained....had to walk the last 5 Km....i finished with a very bad time...but i got my medal....

I know people that compete in ironman events as well as marathon and they run/walk as part of their strategy...of course they can't beat a guy that run the marathon in 2:10"...but for them, the target is to "finish"....

For example, if you stop in the bathroom in Km 20 in a marathon...it doesn't count?

For me, what count is:

1..TO FINISH the distance.
2..To be honest and BEAT yourself.
Scariest sound on a race....

There are actually programs that teach you to run/walk for marathons and half marathons. Especially when you are first starting out trying long runs and you have past injuries...eg. My husband has flat feet and knee problems and when we first do a new long run distance he feels better taking walk breaks at 2 mile intervals. His father who is a regular marathoner encourages him to do this. I will tell you, it doesn't hurt our overall times because when you are running your pace is better because your muscles are rested. Jeff Galloway.com is a good place to go if you are interested in run/walk programs.

We are doing the Chicago Marathon this year and I noticed that they are going to have run/walk pace groups. Our plan is to take some short walk breaks throughout because our goal is to finish and not for time.

As far as I am concerned...if you cross the finish line in the allowed finish time it DEFINITELY counts!!!

Personally I would say you'd have to run or intent to run at least the majority of the distance. I fully understand run/walk programs though and you can of cause get injured and be forced to walk in order to complete, but walking the whole way - I would classify that as a different activity than a running race.

There is no rule that says "you must run 70% for this to count". It's really just what you feel yourself. I guess if they still give you a medal at the end "it counts" in their book.

Personally I don't walk, and see walking as failure...but this is the wrong way to think, and I would much rather not be this way.

In the 64km ultra I ran last month I "ran" the whole way. Another guy did 25 minute run / 5 minute walk intervals...and beat me home by 20 minutes. Who's the smarter? And I certainly wouldn't be saying to the other guy that his 64km ultra "didn't count" because he walked some of it.

hi guys felt compelled to add to this discussion-
I always felt that walking was "defeat" or a "failure" - i think the c25k program and this forum challenged this!
stopping for a walk rest break and then starting up jogging again is not a failure. it is merely a means to keep going. way better than giving up and throwing in the program. I have really worked hard to recondition my brain regarding this. Having a walk break is ok. if you keep exercising after this it is great. I aim to keep jogging on each run, but if I do happen to stop and walk i try not to beat myself up over it. I do not see myself as a failure and give up. I think it is allowed- though i still try to avoid this if i can.
stopping exericising and running is a failure not walking during a run!

As I said, for some people it is a neccessity that allows them to run for the majority of the time (aka My husband). I can run the whole way but I do what is needed to keep my husband and I together on runs and be his motivation to finish a long run.

Judy....

What have you done?

hahaha

I agree with all of you guys...

The GOAL is not to walk, feels waaaay better to end a race or a run WITHOUT walking breaks that's for sure...

But it feels waaaaay better to end up a race or a run "EVEN WALKING" than QUIT.

Everybody is different and nobody blame for that.

Keep running.

I already love this forum!!

I am doing C25K with the goal of doing a 5K on July 11th, but my hometown is having one on June 26th (I will be in like week 7?) and thought "but what if I have to walk part of it?"

So glad that walking is something others do and have had to do. Whew!

The first 5k we ever did (our graduation run for c25k) we ran the whole thing and we were beat by a lady that walked at least half of the race!!! Every time we caught up to her while she was walking she started running again!!

I have only run 2 5Ks and I "ran" the whole way on both. One had a giant hill and I probably could have walked as fast or faster than I "ran" but I kept running. Just didn't feel like I could say I ran a 5K if I hadn't run the whole way. But I am looking forward to maybe some day being able to "do" a 1/2 marathon--maybe that is the key, I will "do" it even if I can't run it all and have to walk some. Just can't imagine ever being able to run 13 miles without walking--although I couldn't imagine running 3 miles 6 months ago so who knows??

I am a coach in a runing group and I coach the walkers.  Our group consists of every range of walker/runner and a few of our members have qualified for the Boston marathon.  Everyone in our group uses an interval method and the elite runners usually do a 7 minute run with a 30 second walk interval.  One thing to keep in mind is the walk interval is not really a break.  It is a break for your running muscles since you use a different muscle group for walking, but you should still be walking with intensity so mentally it is not a break.

Also, for those that think walking is a failure I challenge you to complete a half marathon walking - no running.  I was in a half in May and I overheard a conversation of other walkers who usually run and they said that was the most grueling half they had ever done.  They said walking that distance is much harder than running.

The only real failure is never starting.

I have two friends that walked an entire marathon.  It took them 8+hours (8:26:xx I think) and then I have my Red Stapler Boy friend who is a 3:30:xx marathon runner.  I have the utmost respect for each of their accomplishments, (and also think all three are a little nuts).

IMHO it takes the same dedication, stamina and mental toughness regardless of how you get there... be it walk, run or roll.

When I cross the finish line of my first half marathon using a run/walk technique ... I double dog dare ya to try to pry my medal out of my hands.  You can bet it'll count. Beer [B]

one morning I woke up inspired to try

That's why I always say I "completed" the Peachtree Road Race or "did" it ... I never say I ran it. lol There were small bits of running but to say I ran it is an entirely different connotation. I have another 10K in September after I complete C25K, and while I don't expect to run all of that, I'm certainly going into it with the expectation that I will run signnificant portions of it ... and maybe even get to say I "ran" it. lol
