MP3 Players Are They Allowed?

I was reading the list of items that aren't allowed during the 5k I signed up for in January and they listed MP3 players and headphones. This is my first 5k (I just started the program yesterday), and I was wondering if this is true or something officials just let slide by. This wouldn't be a deterrent or anything, I'm just curious what others have come across. Thanks!

A number of races don't allow them because of insurance cover reasons. Some then tend to ignore competitors who use them. Other races though disqualify runners who ignore the rule.
I used to have my iPod with me during every race, however have now weaned myself off it, even in half and full marathons. Couple of reasons:
1) I like the interaction with other runners during a race. If you have headphones on, other runners will ignore you.
2) To run at my best takes a lot of concentration. If I'm not concentrating properly and go to lala land, my pace starts dropping off. My iPod takes me to lala land.

There are some risks involved in letting a bunch of runners run through city streets with headphones -
If the music is too loud, they won't hear directions, and may end up going the wrong way (for those races where part of the track is shared 5K/10K/half)
If the music is too loud, they may not hear warnings from other runners if a runner is down/out of breath ahead of you. If you're really zoned you might not see it.
Rarely, there will be an emergency vehicle needing to get through to pick up or haul to the hospital, a runner who collapsed (heat, heart attack, dehydration, you name it). Runners who can't hear won't get out of the way of a vehicle approaching from behind, and valuable seconds could be lost getting them to help.

You don't think of what you may miss out on or the risks that come with listening to your music when you haven't been involved with a race yet. Thanks for the input.
