Stick out tongue [:P] Nike+ Ipod
Reply Quote
Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm curious to know if anyone has tried the Nike+ Ipod sport kit, and if so how did you like it? Also, is there a way to integrate your own music into it? (I was using Ullrey's podcast but his music was driving me bananas so I created my own podcast w/ Audacity). Right now I have nothing but memory to gauge any improvements in speed or distance and don't really consider myself that serious of a runner to invest in a fancy schmancy Garmin GPS.

Any thoughts are welcome. If not, I'll probably invest in one anyways and post my review.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and have not had good luck with it.  The directions say to plug the receiver into your Nano and Nike+ should show up on the menu--but it didn't. I took it to the Apple store and of course they got it to work right away. The difference was they also took the sensor out of the package and moved it around a little until the receiver and sensor were communicating with each other and then it showed up on the menu. The directions did not mention that part, but oh well, now it's working so that's what matters. Right? Wrong--I've tried it several times now and it does not record the correct distance. Tried calibrating it, a couple of different ways and no go. Last time I went out I ran just over 3 miles and it said I had gone .17 miles--No! Not even close!  Very frustrating. I plan on trying to calibrate it again but if I can't get it to work, it's going back to the store. Ugh!

You may have better luck with it though, and if you figure out how to calibrate the thing, let me know. Ok?

Thanks for the review - I'm a bit discouraged to invest in one now! Do you have Nike+ shoes or did you get one of those shoe pouch thingamajigs (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UGLIXC/ref=s9_simz_gw_s0_p193_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=1PKPR9FZ0925Y6JTQRPN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846)? If and when I do purchase it, I'll probably go with the shoe pouch since I love my sauconies.

I've read great reviews on it, but have also read some other gripes with calibration. I'll keep ya posted.

My experience with Nike + iPod Sport kit has been nothing but good. I use it with Nike shoes, I don't know if that makes any difference, but it's mostly been accurate when it comes to distances as well as time. And I figure, even if it's not exactly accurate, it's close enough for me. And it will still show how time/speed is improving.
That being said, I use the sport kit with my iPod Nano, and can't wait until they come up with a solution for the iPhone where it can be connected to the GPS etc.

I really like being told time or distance while running, and I really, really like being able to use my own music while running. I constantly change the playlist I use, a major reason why it was nice to stop using the podcasts. It's also a big motivation for me to see my improvements in time and speed, and the information of each workout is easily transferred to iTunes and the nikerunning site after each run. I have recordings of every run/walk I've done using the sport kit on the nike running site, I've also joined challenges and set goals for myself on the site. I'll definitely continue using the sport kit as long as it works as well as this, and yes - I forgot the best part - every time I've run faster/longer than I've done before - Lance Aarmstrong, Tiger Woods, or Joan Benoit Samuelson will congratulate me and tell me how well I'm doing! I'm using Nike+ with my iPhone. It took a little work to get it calibrated, but it's pretty accurate now and the data is helpful. It's motivating to log in to the site and watch your progress. I completed two of my goals this morning, which really just means that it's time to set new goals Big Smile [:D].

I have been using the Nike sport band - fantastic, about to upgrade to the Ipod.

Definatley worth the investment if you want to challenge yourself. Like someone else mentioned it is great to improve your pace and record all your runs. They seem to be improving them all the time.

I have clocked up 250kms on mine....

ILikePizza--can you explain to me how you calibrated it? I've been following the directions but so far no luck.

I'm using mine with my iPhone, so the process on a Nano may be slightly different. What I did, though, was select "Calibration" from the main Nike+ screen and then "Walk" and then "Custom Distance." I set the custom distance to 0.50 miles. I started the workout, and when I finished walking a distance known to be 0.50 miles, I pressed "End Workout." I repeated this process for "Run." I then walked and ran 0.20 miles and verified the correct distance was recorded by Nike+. You could do this on a running track; I did it on a walking path that has markers every 1/10 of a mile.

^it's the same on the Nano. I picked out a 1km marked track. Ran it on calibrate mode. Ipod said "that was 960m". I said "no it was actually 1km". and viola, calibrated.

I love the Nike+ system, people complain about the accuracy, but for less than $100 you can't go wrong! If you want better accuracy, buy a Garmin.

(although to the poster who said it was WAY out in this thread, that statement isn't directed at you, i feel your pain).

Ok, I finally got it working. I googled it and found some people on another forum having the same problem. 1st of all--you have to have the orange side of the sensor face up--I had it upside down. It also said to have it as flat as possible so I moved it from the top part of the shoe laces to the part closer to my toes. And Voila! It works!!! I still had to calibrate it but it was MUCH closer--it said 1.16 miles when I had gone 1.0 mile. I finished my run and it said I had gone another 2.1 miles which was perfect. Yay!!

I forgot about the upside-down thing. I did the same thing, and it showed a 2.6 mile run as 0.81 miles. Once I got that and the calibration sorted out, though, it's been very accurate.

I've been using mine since April. I love the graphs and the challenges. Mine is a little off on the calibration, but like someone else said, its close enough for me. It actually says I went farther than I did. Not sure I would like the other way around. 1 word of advice: don't let your 2-year old near the sensor cause you'll lose it and have to buy another one like I did.

I love the Nike i pod tracker, it's not always perfect, but it sures beats nothing. I also Like that it keeps up with your total miles. It was a huge accomplishment the day I completed 75 miles run! I write about it in my blog all the time. I'm sure you'll enjoy, plus, it's reasonably priced. http://runningintoshape.com/2009/07/07/why-did-the-duck-cross-the-road/
