So, an update on my progress in the C25K journey.
I knew it had to happen sooner or later, but I managed to submarine the good pace I had going up until just a couple weeks ago. All the way through to week 5 day 2 I managed to keep perfect pace with the schedule. I never missed a run, and I ran every section of every run (albeit some sections I ran very slowly). Then I went on that cruise and only managed 2 runs that week (w5d3 and w6d1), both on a treadmill. After I got home I managed to get a very nasty sinus infection and missed another entire week of running.
Now, when I tried to get back into things I had to make a choice, continue from where I left off, or backtrack. I received my new Nike's on Friday of last week, and even though I still felt pretty sick, I had to get out and try to run. I decided to repeat week six day one and see how I fared. The first two sections were fine (5 minute and 8 minute) but I had some difficulty with the last five minute run. I chalked this up to the cold and figured I would try again on Sunday. Sunday came around and the run was virtually identical (and I still was not fully recovered), so I figured O.K., Tuesday I will begin the week six again and it will be time to get back on the schedule. Well, today is Monday and it is the first day that I have felt considerably better from my cold / sinus infection. I also had a picnic at work for lunch and ate too many sweets, so I figured I would do a short run today to make up for it.
I decided to mix things up and re-do week 1 day 1 at a much quicker pace than my normal one(7:30-8:30/Mile instead of 11:30-12:30/Mile). This faster pace represents about as much an increase in speed from my normal run (4min/mile) as my normal run is from my walk. The first 2 runs (one minute a piece, nothing big right?) went well and I kept in the 7's. The second two minutes I was in the low 8's as I started to feel that the recovery time did not quite let me recover fully. Around the 6th minute I developed my first side stitch (cramp) since I have started this program, and it was a big one (not to mention my time slipped to high 8's). The last two runs I went at my old pace, 11:30 to 12:30.
I am not sure if this run will end up having helped me or hurt me (or do neither). One thing it did do is make me realize that increasing my pace (as opposed to just the duration of my runs) will be as great, if not significantly greater a task then getting to 5k in the first place.
In the end I would like to be able to run 5k but also do it in a respectable time, perhaps averaging an 8/mile.
Hopefully as long as I keep doing something, the progression will be there.
Please let me know what you guys think (about playing catch up with your program, re-peating on easier runs, or doing completely off the wall things like what I did today).
Best wishes,
-Ken
