Embarrassed [:$] Shin splints :S
Reply Quote
Alright, so I've done week 1 three times now because of my asthma (outdoor allergies)...and I have developed  wicked shin splints. I'm used to running on the treadmill but due to relocating, that is no longer an option. I'm reading up on the importance of a good pair of runners..but does anyone else have techniques for alleviating shin splints. I am slightly pigeon toed (feet point inwards) and I think that is making the running harder. Does anyone else have that dilemma? I'm slightly ignorant when it comes to running outdoors. Embarrassed [:$] Thanks

Hi Rissa,

Well done for sticking with the programme through, what sound like, pretty difficult issues. Hopefully it won't be long before you start seeing some tangible rewards.

As for shoes, there's no alternative, you need good quality, new, well-fitted running shoes. The stress that's brought to bear on your joints, muscles and connective tissue when you're running outdoors is
at least three times your bodyweight. If your shoes aren't up to the job you will get injured, and long-term injury is almost certain to affect your motivation. Treadmills provide much more support and take away alot of the strain
of moving yourself forward.

You need to find a specialist running store - I don't know where you're from, but the Runner's World website has a very comprehensive list - where they will take the time to analyse your gait and find exactly the right type of shoe for you.

To help with the soreness right now, try taking some soothing warm baths, and try stretching your shins - gently - by pointing your foot, holding for ten seconds, and gently bringing it back.

Hope they get better soon.

Thanks so much for the tips. I actually chatted with an employee from the running room and she said that I need orthotics and until I get those I am to take it easy on the running. Perhaps I'll have to hit up a treadmill again, those are way easier.

Thanks again.

Rissa,

I suffered with Shin Splints for years, the problem? Cheap running shoes! Get some decent ones from a proper store, they will be worth every penny!

I walk/run with my toes pointed slightly in and I was getting terrible terrible shin splints and have always had knee problems.  I got an over the counter orthotic from Dr. Scholl's for Knee pain and I run with it and use it in my daily life.  I have had zero pain since I got it.  The only trouble I had was some pain in my arches at first and if I am on my feet all day long.
