12 miles...you're nearly upto half marathon distance. Great effort! I quite like the Powerbar Gels...but only the "Espresso Love" flavour. It's a bit embarrassing asking for it at the running shop though.
I also use Gu brand, again the coffee flavour.

I finished a 16 mile long run today. It was tough and I am sore, but I made it! Here's a link to the run I ended up averaging 12 minute miles, which is slower than my normal pace, but I'm happy with just finishing!
3 months until the marathon, it's coming up quickly.

Awesome! I don't know if I'll ever aspire to run a marathon, but it's exciting to here your progress. Congratulations!
Next up: More 5k running!

I haven't been on for a while, thought I would give an update. I just finished a 23 mile long run, I have one more long run to go, I'm debating on whether to make it 24 miles or 25. My marathon is a little over a month away! My 23 mile run was one of my slower runs, I averaged a 11:55 pace, while I am usually somewhere around 10:30 and 11:00. I think I went out to fast, and I was paying for it in the last 3 miles! But I made it, and for that I am happy =)

23 miles is more than enough...my marathon is in just over four weeks also, and my longest run has been 21 miles. I have another 20 miler on Sunday week.
Very few people run more than 20 miles in their marathon prep. The last thing you want to do is over do it, and get injured.
Congrats on the progress...let us know how the race goes!

Mine is on October 19. I ran my last long run of 21 miles last weekend, and am now on the taper running 13 miles this Sunday, then 10 miles the week after.
I'm feeling really good, no real injuries to speak of and am raring to go.
Last year I ran this race in 4 hours 20 minutes, this year I'm targetting 3 hours 50 minutes, so half an hour quicker.
I love the preparation for a marathon, and the whole journey thing.
It takes a lot of work, and there are no short cuts. But when you run the race it is ultra rewarding.

It's been awhile since I posted, thought I would give an update.
I finished my first marathon! It was a slower time than I hoped, I started out way to fast, but I did it! I now have my sights set on the next marathon, I'm thinking about the Pittsburgh Marathon in May as I have some family there I can visit.
