Re: So what do you listen to while you run?

I'm new here, just started running this week. I will be done with my first week of the C25K on Sunday.
I found some of the music on other pod casts to not be motivating. Some sounded like meditation music.
I found my girl Suz and I love her music. Yeah, as she said, she sounds like she is on helium, but she is on there minimally, just to tell you when to run and when to walk.
So far, so good!!

Concur with the "great book" comment. I love Orson Scott Card's writing.
(My first post btw. It took OSC to bring me out)

I was listening to: Springsteen, The Hold Steady, U2, The MoFo Party Band (best blues/harmonica/rockin out band ever!*), Daughtry, Toby Keith, Hootie and the Blowfish, AC/DC.
But I found it too hard to keep track of the intervals since I run outside at night. So I switched to Robert Ullrey's podcasts W3D2. He's done a great job and I thank him profusely for creating those podcasts. That being said, I can't wait to get to 25 minutes and back to MY music. Tomorrow will be W4D2 and I get to switch back to my motivation on W5D3. Bring it on!

that's a great book |

I second that! The rest of the series is good, too. I need to go back and read the couple Card added since I read the series.
I still listen to Podrunner fixed bpm podcasts and used the Podrunner:Intervals for C25K. I've tried spoken podcasts and can't stand them. I obsess too much about my breathing.

I got started with Ullrey's podcasts, but when I failed to complete the last five minute run on W4d1, i decided to mix up some music with the cues provided by Lestyn's podcast. The thought being, with songs I'm familiar with, I'll have a sense of how much time I have left for any given interval - audio landmarks, if you will.
I think it worked- I successfully completed W4d2, although the last 60 seconds were murder. So, with that, here's the playlist:
Five minute warmup walk: "Robots", Flight of the Conchords; "Family First", Logan Whitehurst
Three minute run: "Pinball Wizard", The Who
90 second recovery walk: Babylon 5 Season 4 open
Five minute run: "Little Lover's So Polite", Silversun Pickups
2.5 minute recovery: "Sugar on my Tongue", Talking Heads
Three minute run: "Since U Been Gone," Kelly Clarkson
90 second recovery: "That Dark Path", something I found on the web
Five minute run: "Time Stand Still", Rush
...and that's probably more information than anyone is interested in. :)

Here is what got me through Week 9 and the first three weeks of OHR. Might seem a little hardcore, but the BPM keeps me going.
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (WARM UP)
30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill
Bedouin Soundclash - St. Andrews
Coldplay - Viva la Vida
Rise Against - The Good Left Undone
Incubus - Anna Molly
Silversun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles
Linkin Park - Faint
The Offspring - You're Gonna Go Far Kid
Linkin Park - Bleed It Out
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings (WARM DOWN)

With the shorter intervals I made sure the song was long enough to last through the entire interval. But now that I'm on 5 minute intervals, I can let it cycle through a few songs per run. Time's not much of an issue because I run a track so I know about how far I should go per interval, and I check my watch for more specific time.

I've added John Hiatt and Stevie Ray Vaughn to my playlist. Nothing like some swinging blues guitar and postive lyrics to keep the motivation up.
I forgot how much I love SRV. His cover of Superstition is a hot mess and that's a good thing IMO.

For those with iPhones or iTouches doing the program there is a pretty good C25K app that I used to get thru the program. It works great cause you don't have to watch anything.
You start your music, then start the app. It then dings or bells when to walk or run. There is also a visual element. It turns colors or something.
The only thing I really didn't like is that I couldn't figure out how to change songs without the app stopping. Wasn't the end of the world, but annoying. Maybe with the new OS coming this summer that issue would be solved.

We run to very similiar music! So maybe I could recommend some you might like... I have a "running" playlist on my Zen and it has Basement Jaxx (they have both upbeat and downbeat songs, just pick the upbeat ones), Chemical Brothers, Justice (especially Phantom I and Phantom II), Boards of Canada, Dizzee Rascal, Kanye West, etc. Just youtube any of the ones you haven't heard before and see if they work for you. I need something with a strong beat to take my mind off the running.

I've recently found out about a band called Old Crow Medicine Show that I've been listening to during workouts all week.

I'm still listening to the podcasts - both Robert Ullrey and DJ Beatsmith until I get further along into more lengthy runs.
However, when I want to jam to something that makes me want to DMAO (or walk really fast) - I listen to "Bring Ya To The Brink" by Cyndi Lauper. Yes - Cyndi Lauper, but this ain't your 1980's Cyndi Lauper!! It's got some serious hi-energy dance tunes on it.
Click HERE for some of the songs that have been loaded onto YouTube. I particularly like: Into the Nightlife, High and Mighty, Give it Up and Lay Me Down - but all of them are good (some have language, so be careful).
