Soreness!
Reply Quote

I will be doing W1D2 this afternoon and this morning I woke up with soreness in my thighs, specially the right one. Righ after W1D1 I didn't feel anything (only very tired), and then a little bit on my rest day, but today I'm REALLY feeling it. Is it OK to run like this or should I take another rest day? What should I do so I don't feel it anymore? I'm not sure if this soreness is because I never exercised before or maybe I did somethig wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Agatha,

I think the main criteria for situations such as this is to decide whether the soreness impedes your ability to run. If you start running and the soreness eases or remains the same then you should be ok. If it becomes painful to the point that you have to adjust your stride or stop running, then it's probably safer to let it rest for a day or two.

See how you get on and let us know how you're feeling.

Gary

I agree with Gary.  If it's a sharp pain, I'd be very cautious.  If it's a general soreness, I think you should go ahead and continue as planned.  After a few workouts, the soreness should lessen and hopefully not be there at all!  It often took a couple days for my soreness to peak, so what you are experiencing sounds normal to me.  You're waking up muscles that have been slumbering for a while.  They are just protesting a bit!

Next up: More 5k running!

Well, I checked the internet and I think I know what happened to me. It’s called Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which is a pain often felt 24 to 72 hours after exercising and that is exactly what I had. It is supposed to subside within 2 to 3 days and it’s probably due (at least in my case) to a sudden change of intensity in my exercises (meaning I didn’t exercise at all before and I’m now hehehe).

Anyway, they recommend the R.I.C.E treatment and that’s what I am doing. I went to train yesterday but my right thigh was hurting a lot, so I just brisk walked the whole time. I’ll rest today and start W1D1 again tomorrow.

I just don’t understand why only my right thigh is hurting like that, but anyway, the important thing is that this morning I’m feeling much better already, so I’m sure I’ll be able to do W1D1 tomorrow.

Thanks!!!

Cool [H]

I did my W1D1 two days ago and my muscle soreness has most definitely kicked in today. In my calf muscles in particular. It hurts to walk :D
I found that stretching, taking long hot baths and rubbing them seems to make them a bit looser.
I'm going to be running D2 today. Ouchy.

I'm sure your body will appreciate you taking the time to break it into all this exercise.

This is a very untechnical guess, but maybe your right thigh is hurting more because you use that leg to pull yourself forward? Like if you always start running with your right leg.

Good luck, anyway :)

I think you'll both find that this will subside after about 2-3 runs. I've found anytime muscles aren't used to the stress of a different exercise, they tend ache around 2 days after the exercise. As you do a few runs they then become used to the effort and the ache generally doesn't reappear.

So if it's simply a mild ache it's usually nothing to be concerned with.

Keep Running!

Howdy,
I am on week 6 and my legs both were sore in the beginning, but now my right doesn't suffer at all. However, any ideas on my left leg? It hurts well, ok, if my thigh were a clock and the front of my thigh is 12:00 and the hamstring is 6:00, my inner thigh is 3:00. The pain is at 2:00 and today it is even at 7:00 a bit. The pain feels deep, not like it's to the bone or anything, but deep. I run one day and it takes me about 2 or 3 days of rest to feel up to another run. Any ideas? I am thinking PART of my problem is that a lot of the roads around here that I run on slope to the left and so my left leg gets more stress, it is also my weakest leg. But I expected the pain to decrease by now.

Are you running on a track? I sometimes get soreness on the side I'm turning around the corners.  Taking them wider has helped.  You may be favoring one side as well.

How's it feeling today?

Hi,
No, I ran on a nearby track for a while but A) it got boring and B) school has started up there again and kids are crawling all over it. ;) So mostly I run around the neighborhood. I would love to head to the local college and use their running trail, way easier on the ol' bones and very pretty. But I run in the AM so that my hubby is home with the kids, but it's getting darker in the mornings and harder for me to stray too far from home... Anyhow, today my leg is pretty sore again. Sigh...

Did I stump everyone on my leg pain? I really hate taking such long breaks in between my days of running, but I don't want to "push through" the pain either. I did week 6 day 1 the other day but I'm not sure when I can get to day 2... Any advice on what might be the cause of this pain? What I could do about it? etc

Hi,
I posted my answer to the pain on another thread and forgot about this one... In case anyone else has something similar I thought I'd post...

I went to my chiropractor because it dawned on me that it COULD be my back and hips. It was! He got me in place and the pain is gone. Then after our 7.5 mile walking race I had pain in my right hip. UGH, but I knew it was my back. Actually it wasn't the race it was the 4 mile walk my DH took me on the next day. I could FEEL my back going out on the right side. So my hip hurt so bad it was hard to walk. Needless to say I haven't run in over a week. And so I went in yesterday and had it adjusted again. Worked! My hip feels MUCH better today. So when all else escapes me, it turns out to be my back! Just FYI...
