What's your pace?

Paigers 08-07-2008, 1:51 PM

How long have you been running and what's your pace? I've been running for 3 months with an 11 min mile.  Does your pace naturally get better with time or only with working on it? Just curious what times people are running.

I have been doing about 11.2.  Today turned out at 11.8, even though I felt faster!  Oh well!

Next up: More 5k running!

I've been running for coming up to two years, and my pace has improved a heap. In my first 5k race in Jan 07 I finished it in 34:30 @ 11:06 pace.

Last week I ran a 5k time trial in 22:56 @ 7:23 pace. For my marathon in October, I will be running at a planned 8:40 pace.

Just stick to the running and it will improve. How much you improve will depend on how much work you put in.

You will find though the most rapid improvement comes in the first six to nine months.

ok. I am starting week 5 on Monday and I do not have a clue what my pace is. I was thinking of buying a garmin wrist watch but I am told they will not be compatible with Apple Mac until September. I have been told by pro runners that nike is very inaccurate and not worth wasting my money on.
What do you guys think?

I agree as I did not find Nike accurate, and ended up with a Garmin.

My running pace is about 11 min/mile so far...nothing too fast I guess.

BTW aside from the Garmen's etc. another way to track you distance is http://www.mapmywalk.com/

As you'll see, you simply draw your route on top of a google map and it saves your route and tells you the distance.
Combined with your watch you can work out your pace etc. I find it very nice to use and it's where I keep my primary training log.

I just completed week 5 of my running program last Friday and my pace for the 20 minute run was 11 minutes and 1 second per mile.  I use the Garmin Forerunner 305 and I really like it.  I'm planning on working to get faster once I'm able to run 5K on a consistent basis.

Hey folks.
I've been running on and off for about a year. My pace varies between 10 and 11:30 per mile.

Hi Batman,

Thanks very much for the mapmyrun website link. I am thrilled now I actually have an idea of how far I am running and I have mapped a 5 km run.
cheers

That's a pretty impressive improvement CodeSlave.  I just finished w7d3, and my pace has not come down nearly as much as yours.  According to my Nike+ (yes, I know - unreliable) I average from 11:30-12:30, and will spend maybe 5-10 minutes of that 25 minute run at 10:30-11:30.

While it may not be accurate, I figure it is at least fairly consistent - so I can use it to map my progress.  I believe when I started my averages were between 12:30 and 14:00, so I shaved a little more than a minute off of my time.

With any luck if I continue to improve at that pace I will reach goal (10:00/Mi) just before the new year.

I use a Polar RS200SD for heart rate/distance/speed.   According to the Polar the other night I averaging around 7.1 mph.   Something around 8:30 a mile.  Keep in mind that many years ago I ran cross country and track and that since then I have biked many many miles and also play ice hockey so my cardio is in pretty good shape.   I probably won't be able to maintain that pace for the longer runs coming up.  I will have to force myself to slow down or i'll burn out.

I've been running for about 3 months.

Normal training pace is about 6:50/km (11 min/mile).

In my first 5K I ran 29:35 which is about 5:55/km (9:30/mile). I have another one on the 9th this month and I'm looking forward to seeing if I've improved.

When we started out we were barely at a 12 min mile. We just invested in a Garmin and the first run we did with it we maintained a 10.41 min/mile pace. It has improved slightly and we will just keep running and increasing miles til it increases more!!
Next 5k is a Turkey Trot!!

I just ran 5K at 9:39 min / mile....quite slow but we are improving over time.
