I've been running 2 1/4 miles in 30 minutes. Pretty slow but I always feel pretty good at the end (for the past few weeks) and think its time I tried running 3 miles and not worry about how long it takes me. Is that too much of a jump or should I work toward it?

Hey Scheezo,
You're probably fine to just forge ahead and do it. It's not much more distance. If you want to ease into it, just add 5 minutes to your next run and 10 minutes to the one after that and you'll be there.
So, when are you doing your first 5K?

:) I keep looking at the 5k's around. Maybe a thanksgiving one... I know it would keep me more motivated. I'm keeping up with my running now but I can see myself getting lazy later. I was even looking at a particular 5k that had times from last year's event. If I could do it in 20 minutes I could win one of the prizes hehe. Maybe I can work on that for next year and just do it for the fun of it this year.

I like the idea of adding on 5 minutes at a time. I bet you could just go ahead and complete 5k without a problem, though. It sounds like you've found a comfortable pace that you could hold for longer. If you do just go for the distance, make extra sure you stretch well and take it easy for a day or two afterward. The one time I injured myself during the program was when I prematurely ran a 4k race. The next day I pulled my quad doing something completely different. I just asked something of my muscles that they were not prepared to give. They really needed to recover.
Next up: More 5k running!
