I guess I'm going to do a 5K

So, every year there is a 5K relay run in town. Our company usually has about 5 teams running and this year my boss asked around if anyone wanted to join in as there are a few open spots.
The race is tomorrow, so I told him I couldn't do it (I'm at week 5 and didn't want to race before I completed all the weeks). Then he tried tempting me, saying that if I did it in 30 minutes, he'd take the whole department out for beer. I told him that I would have no chance, but I would be prepared to take on the bet in a months time and he agreed. So he found a local race on the 12th october and entered us both.
He has no idea that I am doing the C25K and I'm pretty sure he expects me to have to walk the whole thing. I'm currently running around 7-7.20 minute/kilometer, which should give a 35-37 minute 5K, but I'm just going to focus on completing the program first and then work on shaving those 5-7 minutes off afterwards, hope for lots of adrenaline at the race and look forward to the beer :)

Way to go Brian. I'll have a virtual one (well...maybe not so virtual) in your honour in October.
Keep Running! Cheers Batman

That's great! Now you have extra motivation. Getting down to 30 minutes might be tough. But, the motivation and excitement of race day will surely take a bit of time off of whatever you are running in practice.
Is it a good idea that he's running the race, too? Maybe once he sees that you could actually win beer for the department, he might sabotage your efforts! (Just kidding.)
Next up: More 5k running!

For sure I'm going to give it my all. One thing I think is in my favour is that my normal running route is really hilly, lowest point is 22.5 meter above sea level and the highest is 61. That is a 38 difference or something like 124 feet.
The race course is almost flat with only a 11 meter difference between highest and lowest point.
I'm not so worried about sabotage :) His 5K time is around 21 minutes and he already runs with another of my coworkers who has done 3 ironmans and runs in circles around him, I don't think he has tripped him yet :D

If you know the race course, I found it helpful to run the actual course beforehand. It helped me pace myself and I had a good idea of how much farther I had to go, etc.

Brian, I have to tell you that I think its great that you took on the challenge from your boss. That sounds like exactly the kind of thing that would keep me on track if I thought of straying. Good luck and congrats on what you have already achieved.

Remember though, don't be disheartened if you don't do the time in the practice run. You will go 3 or 4 minutes faster just because it's a race on race day. Adrenalin.

I will :)
I am btw. now running 4670 meters in 30 minutes. Just 330 meters more and I'll make it.
Just to increase my chances, I will stop smoking a few days before the run and I've also requited the company's best runner to pace me the whole way through :)
Running caught on a bit in the office, so there is now another guy doing the C25K also and including me, my boss and my pace rabbit, we'll be 6 people in total entering the race. Not bad when you consider it's the IT department and we atleast used to be the most unfit department in the whole company.

Thanks.
I'm down to 31:03 for 5K on a training run, I'm crossing my fingers that adrenaline and rested legs will do the rest on race day.

Not only are you making a healthy choice with your running, you are making a life choice by not smoking! That deserves uber-kudo's. Way to go!!!
*former smoker. It can be done and it gets soooooo much easier before you even realize it.
