When you first start exercising, your blood volume will increase between 5-12%, this can mean a gain of over 1 kg (+2 pounds.) In addition your muscles and liver will begin to store more glycogen and with each gram of glycogen, 2.7 grams of water is stored too. If you increase your glycogen stores by 300 grams that means more than another kg gained. With time you may also gain some muscle, but that takes far longer than most people think.
It's all "good weight" though, you should still be losing fat and if you keep measurements of your body, you will probably see them shrink and after some weeks, you'll see your weight go down again.
Don't get discouraged, the numbers on the weight are just that , numbers - you'll be slimmer, healthier, fitter and have less fat with regular exercise.

Congrats oon starting! You're building muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat! Once the muscle mass inceases to a certain point, and you're running a longer distnace, you'll start to loss the weight you want to lose! Plus, you'll see your shape changing probably before you lose any weight! :)

Phew. I was fearing the same. At a recent doctor's visit I had gained about 5 pounds even though I was in the middle of C25K. I (and my friends) had noticed that I looked more fit and my clothes didn't! I tried to not think about the weight gain knowing that I felt (and looked) better, but it's nice to have some scientific-like explanation.

Are you saying 1kg of muscle weighs more than 1kg of fat? ![Stick out tongue [:P]](/forum/emoticons/emotion-4.gif)
Just being cheeky, sorry.

Thought I'd jump in with my $.02 ...
I gained about 2 pounds from week 1 to week 5 (which was really like 8 weeks) and the holidays were in there. But between the end of week 5 and week 7, I lost about 7 pounds. The whole time I noticed my clothes fitting differently, though.
One thing that's helping me is to cut back on the booze. I know I can't drink the night before a run, and depending on how I schedule my runs, this changes my ... um ... social habits :) I'm convinced at least 20 of these extra lbs are pure beer-weight. The rest, however, is pizza.

Here's my experience with C25K and weight.
I started a new healthier lifestyle back in October when I weighed 365 lbs. A combination of good eating and exercise (walking, stationary bike, and weight training) helped me lose 40 lbs on the scale in 15 weeks. This amount was (anecdotally) around 45 lbs fat lost and 5 lbs muscle gained. That meant I was losing an average of 2.67 lbs per week during that time. I then started C25K and made it my cardio workout while I continued weight/resistance training. My diet remained constant. In just less than four weeks (I completed W4D3 yesterday) I have lost 6 lbs on the scale which works out to an average weight loss of 1.75 lbs per week during C25K.
So I am still losing weight on the scale but my average amount lost is down by 33%. But (and I have a big but) the scale is not telling the whole story; it never does. My legs have turned rock hard since I started running and the muscles on them are thicker and fuller. My body shape has also changed quite a bit. The large band of blubber around my waist has noticeably reduced and my clothes are getting looser and looser. My belt has three new holes in it in order to keep my pants up. There is no doubt in my mind that fat is being burned efficiently and an increase in muscle mass combined with the blood volume and glycogen levels mentioned by briandk have accounted for the "slowing" of scale weight loss.
So my conclusion agrees with the others in this thread: you are making great improvements to your body and the weight gain should not be a big concern. Your body will soon adjust to the new routine and fat — not "weight", but FAT — will continue to be lost.
All the best as you work your way through C25K.
Peace.

I think Brian's post is right on. I gained the first few weeks as well, but in the end lost a little, but lost more inches than what the weightloss numbers would normally have been on me.
As long as you are sure you are eating properly, don't get too concerned over the scale numbers.
But don't get complacent. It's easy to eat a little bit more because you are exercising a bit more. Running doesn't really burn as many calories as most people think and it's easy to get caught up in "I'll have a little of this cause I'm running later,"
one morning I woke up inspired to try

It took me awhile for the weight to start coming off. Really, I gained some then stayed stable until almost week 6 - now I've taken off 12 lbs in the last 12 days.
