Hal Higdon's 10K training for novices
Reply Quote

Well, I printed off Hal Higdon's 10K training schedule the other day.  I'm still not sure I'm going to continue on to a 10K, but it seemed like as good a program as any other if I decide to do so.  I would definitely modify it, as with two small children I simply do not have the time to work out every day.  I would probably just do the running portion three days a week.

Anyone else care to share what they are doing post C25K, if anything?  I know we have not had a lot of graduates from the program yet, so it may take a while for this thread to really get going.

I was actually thinking about doing the One Hour Runner, a program to get your times up, also on coolrunning.

I never heard of the one you mentioned, gotta check it out!

I finally checked out the OHR (one-hour runner) program, and I am definitely going to go that route.  Thanks for pointing it out!  One thing I liked about C25K was that you could either run for time or distance.  I did the program running for time.  I like that OHR continues along that same vein.  I also like that it picks up right where C25K left off and that there is only one long run a week, which I can do on the weekends when my husband is home to be with the kids.  I was supposed to start the program today, but it is very rainy and messy outside, and I generally run with my 22-month-old in a stroller, so it may have to wait until tomorrow.

I did run my first 5K on 04/19 (planning a separate post for that!).  Since then I have not run, as I had houseguests and then a very busy weekend this past weekend, so I am itching to get back in the game.

One-Hour Runner - On week 2
Reply Quote
The first three weeks of the One-Hour Runner program are the same as week 9 of the C25K program - three 30-minute runs per week.  It is not until week 4 that you start to add time.  I just started week 2 yesterday, so nothing really new to report yet.  However, I'd love to know if anyone else is following this program right now or is planning on starting it in the near future!

I have one more run left of week 3, and then next week I finally start adding time.  Should be an easy week, as I believe the three runs are 30 minutes, 29 minutes, and then 34 minutes.  I am signed up for another 5K on June 8.  Want to beat the time of 32:23, which was my time for my first 5K.  I am currently trying to decide when I will get a 10K on the books to inspire me and keep me motivated.  I am looking at two, one in July and one in August.  We'll see!!  My son's preschool has ended, and that is generally when I would fit in two of my runs, so I am going to have to figure out a new schedule that works.

After I complete my 5K, I'm planning to move on...

But since I've been using Podrunner Intervals, I figured I'd just hop over to "Gateway to 8K" - the program being released now - first.  That will only be 2 K shy of a 10 K, but will be a nice stepping stone for me.

This is very interesting though, thanks for the reports!!  And, good luck on quickening your time.  My goal on my July 13 5K is to finish it without walking...  I'll worry about whether it's 30, 40 or 50 minutes after I finish it!  Big Smile [:D]

From 5K to 10K

Can anyone recommend a good program for going from 5K to 10K?  I just did my first 5K and I really want to move up to a 10K.  I used Robert Ullrey's podcasts for the C25K program and I was wondering if there was something similar for the 10K?  I like how easy it is to just put on the headphones and go and he tells me what to do!

I thought about making a set of tracks for the One Hour Runner, but it's ALL running, just different lengths of time.

Best bet is to get a playlist together of songs you like, examine their lengths, and come up with a combination that is 'close' to your 35/40/50/60 minute run.

The only bad part about that is that it doesn't tell you 'halfway there, 5 more minutes, etc., but if you know what the last song is, you know you have that little bit left. Also, tempos vary, and the tendency is to run to the beat, so if you are going for speed rather than distance, you might want to match your songs up with the tempo you want.

Thee are several GOOD programs listed in this thread. HalHigdon has some good training programs on his website, I think it's http://www.halhigdon.com

And if you Google 'One Hour Runner' you wi.ll find the explanation for it on the Coolrunning site.
