30 minutes to 5K?

Kylie 04-13-2008, 3:08 AM
I don't know what to do. I can run 30 minutes very slowly... covering 2.5km. I'd really like to be able to say that I can run 5K. I don't know the best way to go about it. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kylie

Now that you know you can run 30 minutes, I'd say scrap time and focus on distance.  You are now running 2.5 miles.  Maybe you could map out a run of 2.75 miles and try to do that next for a week or so.  Once you can do that, you could map one out that is 3 or 3.1 miles.

Thanks Danielle,

I do find time difficult during the week, as I have 2 kids at home and 2 at school, so need to work in runs around them, hence my treadmill running. I wonder if there is any advantage to starting C25K again but at a faster speed? I saw from my outdoor run yesterday that I can run faster, but not for an extended period. I guess ultimately, I'd like to run a 5K efficiently. So do I work on distance, speed or both? I have been thinking (insomnia is a wonderful thing) about doing 2 days of C25K during the week. I have a 5K course mapped out on Mapmyrun and thought I could go down to it on weekends and run as far as I could, then walk th rest... running more if I felt that I could.

I don't know.... thinking out loud really. Sometimes I think too much. I'm good at following programs, not so good on my own.

Thanks again,
Kylie

I would extend one of the runs by 5 minutes every week. Keep the other one at 30 minutes. Just worry about distance, not speed for now.

Thanks Rob. I'll start extending my weekend run by five minutes and leave the weekday ones as is.
