Question about Podcasts
Reply Quote
I have downloaded Ullrey's first week podcast. The file was a .m4a file. I'd like to play it on my mp3, but for some reason, my mp3 player isn't recognizing it - it's a Sansa c250. Do I need to take this file and convert it to another format? I've never seen this .m4a format.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions you can give me.

I honestly don't know much about the Podcasts. I know my Apple iPod has a Podcast spot on it. SO I'm thinking podcasts are only playable on iPods. I definately don't know for sure, but that's all the help I can give.

I think I might be able to help you.  I have been producing a Podcast for nearly two years and I have seen lots of confusion about this.

The term Podcast is a general term that usually refers to some kind of audio/video program delivered via the internet.  It is NOT exclusive to the iPod, and does not have to be played on an iPod or mp3 player.  You can play them right through your web browser.

The file format .m4a you  are having trouble with is exclusive to iTunes and the iPod.  It is an "enhanced" file that includes chapters, visual cues and more that can only be used with an iPod or in iTunes (available for both Windows and Mac)

If you want plain .mp3 a file for Ullreys podcasts without the extra stuff you can get them here:

http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page6/page6.html

The mp3 file will play on almost all digital music players including iPods, but does not have the "enhanced" features.

I hope that helps.

Mike

Thank you! I have a Sansa as well and have never used a podcast before. This is incredibly helpful.
